ID Grinding & Honing
Precision Grinding for Internal Diameters and Tight Tolerances
ID (Internal Diameter) grinding is a precision machining process used to remove material from the inner diameter of cylindrical or conical parts. It employs a rotating abrasive wheel to achieve tight tolerances and smooth finishes on the internal surfaces of components. ID grinding is commonly used for applications where precise inner dimensions and surface finishes are required, such as in automotive bushings, gear bores, bearings, and hydraulic components. The process is capable of removing material in the range of thousandths of an inch, making it suitable for finishing operations where accuracy is crucial.
Honing is a finishing process that uses abrasive stones to remove very small amounts of material from the inner surface of a workpiece. The primary goal of honing is to improve the surface finish, roundness, and dimensional accuracy of the bore. Honing produces a distinctive cross-hatched microfinish that is extremely smooth and consistent, often used to enhance the fit and function of mating parts, such as the bore of a cylinder and its piston. Honing typically removes material in the range of ten-thousandths of an inch, making it a slower but more precise process than ID grinding.
ID Grinding and Honing: Achieve Superior Internal Precision
- handle diameters up to 8” with lengths up to 8”
- achieve tolerances as tight as 0.0002”
- get down to an 8 Ra finish
- range from as small as 0.125″ diameter up to 9″ diameter
- hold tolerances of 0.0002″
- get down to an 8 Ra finish
