Crankshaft Grinding
Precision Surface Grinding for Cylindrical Parts with Tight Tolerances
What Is Crankshaft / Eccentric Shaft Grinding?
A crankshaft and an eccentric shaft are mechanical components that convert motion, but they differ in design, function, and application.
A crankshaft is designed to convert linear, reciprocating motion into rotational motion, while an eccentric shaft is typically used to create a precise, off-center rotation for variable control in machinery.
Crankshaft and Eccentric Shaft: What are the Differences?
A crankshaft is the main rotating shaft in a reciprocating engine, like those in a car, or motorcycle.
- Function: It converts the up-and-down (reciprocating) motion of the pistons, caused by combustion, into the rotational motion that turns the transmission and ultimately the wheels.
- How it works: Connecting rods link the pistons to offset parts of the crankshaft, called “crankpins” or “rod journals”. As the pistons move up and down, they push and pull on the crankpins, causing the shaft to rotate. We also make crankpins.
An eccentric shaft is a control shaft with an offset axis of rotation, which allows for precise and variable control of movement.
- Function: It’s used in certain types of machinery to create a variable or oscillating motion. A key application is to precisely adjust the stroke or lift of a component.
- How it works: The center of the shaft is offset from the center of the rotating disk or “eccentric.” A motor rotates or pivots this shaft, changing its position and adjusting the valve lift or other mechanism.
