Precision Grinding for General Aviation Piston Engine Components

We grind parts that go into overhauled and remanufactured horizontally opposed piston aircraft engines, working as a process supplier to the machining houses and engine shops that hold the FAA approvals.

Crankshaft work is the part of this we do most. Journals, pins, and fillet radii on a piston engine crank are a profile grinding problem before they are a size problem, and the surface finish on a journal is what the bearing lives or dies on.

Grinding for General Aviation Engine Components

Parts We Grind for This Market

  • Crankshaft journals, crankpins, and fillet radii
  • Valve train and lifter components
  • Accessory drive shafts, pins, and bushings
  • Cylindrical parts requiring documented dimensional inspection

Why Our Equipment Fits

Twelve Mitsubishi CNC grinders, straight and angle head, doing precision profile work on spheres, angles, and radii to 6 inch diameter by 36 inch length, at 0.0002 inch on diameter and 0.0006 inch on length, finishes to 8 Ra. Dedicated crankshaft grinding capability. Honing from 0.087 to 2.0 inch for bores and bushings.

Materials

This is the market where material capability matters more than machine capacity. We grind A286, Inconel 625 and 718, Hastelloy, Incoloy, Monel, titanium, and 17-4 PH and 15-5 PH stainless as regular production work, alongside nitrided and case-hardened steels.

Nickel alloys work-harden the moment the wheel dwells and carry heat into the part rather than the chip, which is why burn and residual stress turn up on parts that measured in tolerance. Wheel selection and dress frequency are most of the job. If a shop has quoted your A286 or Inconel work like it was 4140 and the parts came back wrong, that is the conversation to have with us.

Straight Talk on Approvals

Custom Production Grinding is ISO 9001:2015 certified. We are not AS9100 registered, we hold no PMA, and we are not a repair station. We work to customer prints and customer requirements flowed down to us in writing, for customers who hold those approvals themselves. If your quality system requires an AS9100 supplier, we are not the right shop, and we will tell you that on the first call instead of the fourth.
